In the below link I have listed several resources for understanding how the Hebrew language has evolved as a language and how it has worked and operated over the evolution. One of the best resources for Hebrew pronunciation is from the Yemenite Jewish communities dialect as well as the Samaritan dialect. These two communities preserved much of what is believed to be the style of Hebrew that has come down over the years from ancient times. http://www.eliyah.com/forum2/Forum10/HTML/001064.html You may also want to go to http://www.jewishmusic.com and do a search under Ahavat Hadassa Yemenite Trad by Beit Hatfutsot you can listen to samples of Yemenite Jewish liturgy where they pronounce Hebrew in one of the more ancient Semeitic Hebrew dialects. The song Ehye Asher Ehyeh should help you how most scholars believe the Seghol was pronounced anciently. There is also a book on the site called Saperi Tama Diwan/Yemen Songs by Naomi and Avner Bahat which will allow you to read how the song is in Hebrew. Most of the songs on the CD are in the Diwan (Music) book. Songs that could help you is "Im Ashmarah Shabbath" and "Qirya Yaphephiya." ------------------ Shimson bar-Tzadoq |

Shimson, Is the english "h" in 'AhYah' supposed to be silenced, if so, what nation speaks of it this way? Or Is the "H" supposed to be vocalized as in 'Ha', and if so, what tribe/nation speaks it that way? Is the aleph wirtten before the 'hay' letter or is the other way around? Thanks for your time, |

quote: The best way to get the sound of Aleph-Hay-Yod-Hay or any Hebrew word for that matter is to actually hear it pronounciation. In some dialects it is Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh and in others it is Ahyah Asher Ahyah. The best way to hear the Yemenite Jewish pronunciation, which is one of the oldest dialects of Hebrew, is to go to the http://www.jewishmusic.com web-site I listed. If you look up the CD which I listed there are samples of the songs. One of the song samples is Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh, which in Yemenite pronunciation sounds like Ahyah Asher Ahyah. Yet, for the EXACT sounds you will need to actually listen to the song. The first three words of the song is "Ahyah Asher Ahyah" so you should be able to get the sound that this dialect contains. The pronuciation of the Hay varies on the particular word since Hay is a Guttaral. Listening to the song I listed will give you the sound that exists in Yemenite Jewish pronunciation of Hebrew as well as certain Sephardic Jewish communities from the Middle East, and Africa.
quote: Hebrew is read from right to left, and the spelling of Ehyeh from right to left is Aleph-Hay-Yod-Hay. The best way to know it is to see it in Hebrew. If you go to the site I listed with the text from Shemoth 3:14 it has the Hebrew of the verse, along with translation and transliteration. http://bible.ort.org/books/torahd5.asp?action=displaypage&book=2&chapter=3&verse=14&portion=13 ------------------ Shimson bar-Tzadoq |
