He is so tiny, his little head is so beautiful and round. They are just enjoying time with him moment by moment and no more. Thank you so much for your prayers. I pass them all on to the family via email. blessings to you all........becky
Tuesday evening:
Good Evening,
This has been a really tough day for Zane and all of us. Zane's blood gasses went bad during the night and both chest tubes had to be replaced. His oxygen had to be turned up to 100% and he still had trouble maintaining his blood oxygen above 85%; his target is 88-92%. The doctors had a meeting with us this afternoon to go over the latest brain scan and to explain his lung situation and other health issues he faces.
The doctors were very direct and honest, and I think they also told us the worst case scenarios and possibilities based on statistics. They pretty much ripped our hearts out. The brain scan is unchanged from last week and there is a "bleed" on the left side of his brain. They say he is at a high risk for cerebral palsy and/or retardation. His eyes are not fully developed yet and the use of 100% oxygen as well as the interruption of the blood vein growth in his eyes leaves him at a risk for blindness.
The biggest concern right now is that his lungs are "in horrible" condition, according to the doctors. There is a fairly substantial hole in one lung that is leaking air into the chest cavity. The hole has been there since the day he was born, but the leakage increased over night.
Wednesday morning: I didn't get this finished last night, so will take up from here. Zane had to have a third tube inserted over night. This is not a flexible tube like the others, but made of stiff material, and is quite uncomfortable for him. Because of that, it is not a tube that can remain in for very long.
Mandy was able to hold Zane for 5 hours on Tuesday and they are preparing him now for another cuddle time. They use a method called "Kangaroo Mother Care" and Zane is moved, with all of his tubes, IV's and respirator directly to her chest for skin-to-skin contact. Yesterday was the first time they got to share this type of contact and Zane tucked up his little knees and snuggled in for almost 5 hours! His blood oxygen levels go way up during the cuddle time. I'm sending a picture of Zane with his mommy and daddy during yesterday's cuddle. It is a beautiful thing to see!
Please keep Mandy and David in your prayers. This is a fiercely hard time for them. We hold on to the Lord and to each other and are taking an hour at a time.
Thank you for your continuing prayers.
Love,
Anne
