Missy and I started this conversation on the Scripture Discussion Forum, but it's really more fitting here, so I'm moving it if anyone else would like to comment or add to it: Original conversation Originally posted by FreeIndeed: Missy, I haven't used toothpaste in years and I get glowing reports from my dentist.

Missy's Reply
But how does your breath smell.. ???? LOL! I am kidding.
My father never used toothpaste either. He used to use baking soda with a little real mint leaf, salt, and a little warm water. He gargled with a teeny bit of peroxide and his teeth were VERY WHITE and his breath always smelled fresh. Those old remedies really work!
But then again my father never bought into all this new age stuff. He made his own cleaning products from vinegar, lemon juice, perioxide, baking soda, etc. And he hardly ever got sick and when he did.. he always made home remedies like onion syrup and used smoke for ear aches and so forth. What ever happened to things like that ? I know.. the world got modern..technology.. and many of us forgot about those fantastic old remedies that work just as good or better than anything on the market. And were and still are CHEAPER!
I started using an organic all natural toothpaste and it's really better than ANY I have ever tried. Free's ReplyI think my breath smells like roses in the Springtime! LOL Your dad sounds like he knew what he was doing, Missy. I used to balk at some things when I was younger, but now I find myself leaning more and more towards those remedies as I mature. My grandma used to have us brush with salt when we were little too and my mom, that I can recall, has NEVER used toothpaste--she's always opted for salt and/or baking soda. Not to derail the thread even further, but you have me curious. What is onion syrup and what is it used for? My son's grandmother used smoke in his ear once when he was an infant and it was all I could do to keep from wrapping my fingers around her neck when she did it (without asking me). I didn't want cigarette smoke anywhere near my child and here she was inhaling smoke and blowing it out into his ear! Yet, lo and behold, he stopped crying and the smoke seemed to soothe his ear ache immediately. Speaking of ear aches, I've been on an antibiotic and antihistamine for an ear and sinus infection for the past week. I haven't had an antibiotic (or any prescription med) in my system for several years and am wondering what I can do to cleanse my system of them now that I've taken them. I wouldn't have taken them at all, but the ear infection led me to the Emergency Room last week with SEVERE ear and face pain and I was in no shape to try to seek out a natural remedy at that point. I'm going to finish the regimen now, because I understand that I can make the infection stronger and more resistant if I don't, but when it's all over (in 4 more days) I want to seriously detox. Bad part is that I'd JUST completed a kidney/bladder cleanse the week before this happened...uuuugh! I'm going to move this over to the Fellowship Forum if anyone has any suggestions, please reply there. Shalom,
onion syrup (my mom always called it 'tea') is a remedy that is easy and tastes great! my mother used to make it for me when i was young, and i remember liking it so much i would have her make it even when i wasn't coughing! haven't had any of that in awhile, but yum!
slice up an onion (yellow preferably) and sprinkle with sugar (aghast!!) in a bowl, which draws out groovy intracellular antibacterial/viral goodness, like sulfur compounds, and let sit for a few hours until a syrupy fluid is in the bottom of the bowl. drink away!!
a recent discovery for me: cayenne capsules have been helping me as of late to stave off headaches that i get quite often. a capsule in the morning with breakfast and at evening with dinner and i am doing great. i also read about adding a teaspoon of it to a cup of warm water, dipping a q-tip into the solution, and swathing the inside of your nose for almost instant relief. i haven't tried that yet, but i'm keeping that in mind in case one hits me broadside.
as for smoke in the ear!! wow, never heard of that one. cigarette smoke makes me almost instantly sick - bronchitis-degree, so i would be VERY hesitant to try that. does smoke from other sources work?
thanks for sharing. this is a great topic idea!

This is a great topic. Thanks for bringing it up over here Free. Well onion syrup is sort of like Burning one described. My father used to make it in a cast iron pan...and give use it for colds, sinus issues, cough, soar throat...stuff like that.. You slice up a large onion, sprinkle it with a good amount of sugar, pour water over it to almost cover the onion. Put a lid on it and bring it to a slow boil. Boil it until it the water and sugar combine to make a syrup like consistency... you have to stir it a lot during the process. After it's done..let it cool a little but make sure it's still warm. Then drink it in a coffee mug. And soon you will have a soothed throat, your nose will feel cleared up, and your fever will go down. You can drink a little fresh orange juice after to help get the taste out of your mouth. My father used to smoke a pipe when I was kid..that's how he got the smoke. LOL! I can still remember that cherry tobacco he smoked.. loved to smell it. Stuff's bad for you though as we all know now but didn't quite gather back then. I am not sure how to get smoke from other sources.. cause you have to inhale the smoke and blow it directly into the person's ear. And I am telling you it REALLY works. My dad did it all the time when I was a kid..and I never had an earache more than one day..nowadays kids have to get tubes in their ears. I wonder could you some how get smoke into a brown paper bag, inhale it and blow it into a person's ear ? Does that sound mega dumb ? Not sure... Another trick is horseradish..if you can stand it.. that stuff will clear up a nasal issue like no one's business.. like if you are kinda stuffy. That stuff.. whoooooooo.... we use it during Pesach. That's how we found out many years ago it can clear up a blocked nose. Stick a teaspoon of it in your mouth and you will smell stuff from a ten mile radius after you stop crying! Another idea is to boil water, pour it into a bowl, stick a tablespoon or so of that Vicks Vapor rub stuff and stir it a little, then put a dry thick towel over your head and make sure you cover the bowl too. So it would be like your head and the bowl is in a tent and inhale for about 10 mins..but be careful not to burn the heck out of your nostrils though. That's a trick I taught myself as a teen when I got sick of that nasty Vicks Vapor rub grease getting all over the place which you can never get out of clothes! Good way to get the benefits of steam and Vicks without the mess! Clears up those nasal passages and gives some relief to the throat. Also you can stop hiccups instantly by swallowing a tablespoon of table sugar. My Dad also use to cut the skins off of potatoes and put them around our wrists and ankles to bring down fevers. I know it sounds like my Dad was a mental nut job but it really worked! And many other elderly people have told me over the years they grew up doing that and it worked for them too. This is fun reminiscing about that stuff!

I'm going to try the onion syrup as it sounds like a great remedy. I know both onions and garlic have strong antibiotic properties and onions help detoxify your blood. Thanks for that reminder, I'm going to try it after I finish these terrible meds I'm on with the ear and sinus infection. I wonder how the syrup tastes with a little garlic added? Burning One, Yes!!! A little cayenne each day keeps heart attacks away too. Instead of an aspirin a day (that most doctors now recommend after a certain age), cayenne will have the same effect. It also helps expedite any sort of cleanse or other herbal detoxification. Dr. Schulze ( www.herbdoc.com)puts it in all of his formulas for that reason. My husband also blends a drink of raw lemons, garlic, cayenne and distilled water together that tastes gross (I can't stomach it), but he swears by it for whatever ails him. Missy, I like your dad's remedies and he doesn't sound like a nut job at all. In fact, if he's a nut then my mom and my grandma are double nuts! lol My grandma used to make us eat a dab of Vick's whenever we got sick. Even though the label CLEARLY said not to ingest it. I don't think I've ever seen horseradish raw. I've only had it as a sauce. I'll have to look for it at the whole foods market. Do you boil it or what? How should it be prepared? That sounds EXACTLY like what I need right now. As for other anti-virals, grape seeds are excellent. It's hard to find them naturally in grapes (as most stores like to sell the seedless variety), but whenever they're at my produce market, I always load up. When I can't get them, I still try to drink a lot of grape juice. A lot of supplements will say that they have grape seed extract in them, which is fine I guess, but I prefer to eat the seeds in their natural state whenever possible. Lately, I've been eating a lot more curry too. I've heard where curry and tumeric are excellent for keeping both cancer and alzheimer's at bay. Though I don't have either, I figure it's good to keep a diet rich in both anyway. Living in the society that we do, with all of the pollutants and chemicals in our foods and our overall environment, it can't hurt to take precautionary measures. I don't regret going to the doctor recently, because I was in such pain, but I do wish I'd been prepared to fight this infection naturally. I do so HATE to take harmful chemicals in to my body. I just pray that no harm has been done and that Yahweh will show me how to never let this happen again. Thanks for the contributions...keep 'em coming! One way to get smoke in the ears are ear cones: http://www.earcandles.net/index3.html That's just one link, there are plenty of others, and you can usually pick up some at a local health food store. My midwife was a naturopath, when i would get a bad cold/sore throat she told me to get 6 - 12 lemons and squeeze the juice out of them, then grate a (apx 3 in) ginger root and put it in a pot with the lemon juice and boil it for about 20 minutes. Drink it, you can add honey to it, too. A friend of ours told us how to get rid of hiccups, this takes another person. The person with the hiccups gets a big glass of water, and the other person puts their fingers in the ears of the person with the hiccups (you don't have to clean their ears out, you just want to block them) and the person with the hiccups then drinks as much water in one long gulp as they can. I have done this for a few years now and it always works. Sometimes i have to do it more then once, usually cause I didn't drink enough water the first time. Hope this helps, angeL

Burning One Yeah you should try it that way... it's not half bad as far as taste goes but even if you don't like the taste it does work.
I can't believe your wife can eat horseradish like that ! Goodness! Now she's one tough woman! Praise YAH!
My husband and I look so pitful every Pesach when we do that part of the Seder. We can't stand it... we buy this whole jar of the stuff for a little bit of it during Pesach all for it to go to waste in the fridge because no one dares touch it afterward.
I make homemade chicken and veggie egg rolls. I have been tempted to try to make a sauce from what's left over before but never tried it.. cause I am a CHICKEN! LOL! But maybe I will after next Pesach.
And yeah.. Vicks in the water is MEGA hardcore. I can stand it for 20 mins. Like I said I started it when I was a teen. So I guess after all those years I've built up a resistence for at least 20 mins. LOL!
FreeIndeed Yeah.. try the onion tea or onion syrup and tell us how it worked for you. I bet a little garlic would add an extra boost. Try it and share the formula with us so we can use it too!
I never tried the cayenne pepper before. But I have hear that stuff works like a charm. I am not really big on spicy stuff... but if it works.. I'll try it.
Good grief, you've ingested Vicks ? Stuff tastes worse than gasoline. BLEH! LOL!
You can get horseradish right in the regular grocery store. It's in the aisle with the eggs at every grocery store I have been in...like close to the eggs, egg beaters.. um butter maybe.. those oven biscuits in the tube.. try there. Or just ask the store clerk, "Hi.. um where's the horseradish ?" LOL! But when you get it.. just try a LITTLE at first.. cause that stuff is so potent just sniffing the lid could knock you completely out of your shoes!
Grape seeds.. I hear they are good for nice hair and glowing skin.. never tried it though. I do drink a lot of kosher grape juice though. I also drink Pomegrante juice. I LOVE IT! All that stuff is good for the blood, kidneys, clearer skin.
I don't blame you for going to a doc. Sometimes you just have to. I mean if I was in a terrible car accident that broke my legs and arms and I had internal bleeding.. believe me.. I would want to be taken to a hospital with certified docs not having people try to make me home remedies. And not all medicine is bad.. Luke, I believe was a Physician. So I don't pass judgement on people that go see docs. I get a check ups every year from docs. And I have blood work done, etc. YHWH gave these people knowledge to help us. Of course, we need to be careful of what we ingest but my family doctor is great. He's not into a lot of this new age nonsense.
angeL MY GOODNESS how could I forget about EAR CANDLES. I haven't heard them talked about in YEARS but I forgot all about them. Of course. I have never used them but I have heard of people talking about them. Thank you so much for the link! Now if I could just get our son to hold still enough to use them! LOL!

Shalom Becky, thanks for the link. i read both pages and will be researching more as well. apparently the capsules i've been taking are only the tip of the iceberg. i'll have to venture down deep and try out some of the direct oral/tincture types. hot is not a problem with me - so we'll see! thanks again!
